Fear
can manifest in many different ways from mild anxiety and nervousness to terror and panic. It can be specific, like
a phobia, or all encompassing, filling us with dread on a daily basis, or as a sinister undercurrent of unease.
Fear is a physiological condition as well as a psychological state. It is a necessary evolutionary mechanism
which enables us to stay safe; the 'fight or flight' response to danger. Therefore, whenever there
is fear there has to be a perceived danger. This is not always rational and sometimes we do not know what triggers
it. However, if we can gain an understanding of the origin of the fear, we can then see it's purpose
and find other strategies to keep ourselves safe.
We can deal with the symptoms of fear
through deep relaxation techniques, where we learn to control certain aspects of our physiology, which then 'switches
off' the fear response, and we can feel more at ease.
